NEW YORK (PIX11) – A volcano in Iceland erupted with the Northern lights in the background on Thursday, a stunning video shows.
The volcano has erupted multiple times since December. The volcano is in the small Icelandic country of Grindavik, about an hour's drive from Reykjavik. Former Brooklynite and Icelandic native Björk posted on her Instagram page when the volcano first erupted.
“This eruption was right next to the mountain that I stood on in 1997 when I filmed with Micheal Gondry as a music video for "'Joga,'” Björk wrote on her Instagram. “I remember explaining to Michael that for me Mother Earth, Joga, moss, and lava is the same thing.”
The volcano has erupted four times in the last three months. Iceland’s Meteorological Office said one of the eruptiond opened a fissure in the earth almost 2 miles long.
Lava first started to spew on Dec. 18, sending lava flowing away from Grindavik. A second eruption began on Jan. 14, a third eruption began on Feb. 8, and the fourth on Thursday — when the Northern Lights were captured, dazzling the skies in the background.
The lava continues to flow towards the nearby small community.
No injuries have been reported.
