Zoom Outage Affects Thousands of Users

Thousands of Zoom users reported issues accessing virtual meetings on Wednesday, as many Americans were working or attending class. The outage started to spike around 11:25 a.m. PDT, with reports surpassing 44,000 just half an hour later.

  • The issue was also reflected on Down Detector, which showed a significant increase in reports of Zoom users experiencing problems.
  • Zoom's official website displayed a "bad gateway" error for some users around the same time.

Zoom Responds to Outage

At 12:17 p.m. PDT, Zoom released an update on its service page stating that it was investigating domain name resolution issues affecting multiple services. Regular updates would be provided, according to the statement.

  • An auto-generated email from Zoom's support team at 1:16 p.m. indicated that services were starting to recover.
  • The email advised users who were still unable to connect to flush their DNS cache and reattempt, suggesting they should be able to connect.

Spotify Also Experiences Outage

Zoom wasn't the only major company experiencing issues on Wednesday. The popular online music and podcast platform Spotify also had a similar spike in problems earlier in the day.

  • Spotify acknowledged the outage, stating they were working to resolve it as soon as possible, but denied that there was a security hack.
  • The issue was resolved shortly after 9 a.m. PDT, with Spotify declining to provide details about the cause of the outage.

Users React to Outage with Memes

The Zoom outage prompted a flood of memes from students and employees that ranged from frustration to celebration.

  • The lighthearted approach to the situation served as a reminder of the importance of technology in modern life, particularly during virtual meetings.
