Harris joins TikTok following candidacy announcement

Vice President Harris now has her own account on the social media platform TikTok as she has recently gained traction on social media in the wake of her campaign announcement.

“Well, I’ve heard that recently I’ve been on the ‘for you’ page, so I thought I would get on here myself,” Harris said in a Thursday post on TikTok, alluding to her recent popularity on the platform.

Harris has increasingly become the focus of memes on the platform  —  which is commonly associated with Generation Z  — as she recently has become the likely Democratic presidential nominee.

Harris’s campaign has capitalized on the memes, including adopting the branding of Charli XCX’s 2024 smash-hit album “Brat” in their header on its official account on the social platform X.

Some have seen Harris’s popularity across multiple social media platforms as a possible signal of stronger support among younger Americans.

CNN commentator Van Jones said on Monday that TikTok has helped the vice president to go from “cringe to cool.”

“There’s something happening that’s hard to quantify, because what’s happening on TikTok right now, is extraordinary,” Jones said on CNN. “All the things that were cringey about Kamala, her laugh, the coconut tree comment, being unburdened by what — all those weird things she’s said.”

“She’s gone from cringe to cool in 24 hours as a whole generation has taken all that content and remixed it in all these incredible TikTok videos,” he added.

Harris will most likely take on former President Trump as her party’s nominee, following President Biden stepping out of the race last weekend. According to a national average of polls from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ, she is currently 2.1 points behind Trump, at 45.7 percent support versus the former president’s 47.8 percent.
