SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Thousands of miles from Kansas City, Chiefs fans in San Diego are rallying together to show their unwavering support ahead of the Super Bowl, proving distance can't dampen their passion.
Patrick McMillin reached out to FOX5/KUSI to share his fandom. He and his wife have been living here in San diego going on 45 years now. But even after moving here, their dedication to their team has never wavered.
They’re now getting ready for the big game and they’re doing it in style. These Kansas City Chiefs fans are cranking up the excitement, transforming their home into a sea of red, gold and white -- ready to light up game day.
The bar is set and the baroque ribs are sizzling away. It’s a family tradition for Patrick McMillan that spans three generations and this season –- like others –- knows no bounds.
“We saw them up in Los Angeles against the Chargers, said Patrick. "We saw them in Kansas City twice. Monday night football -- it was raining quite a bit.”
There is no shortage of team swag in this Chiefs kingdom. “Seriously all year-long,” added Vanessa Butcher, Patrick’s daughter.
Growing up surrounded by Chiefs' pride comes with a hefty collection of gear. "I probably have at least 50 different Chiefs shirts, bathing suits, scarfs, gloves, jackets all in one closet,” she told FOX 5/KUSI.
Her dad’s collection is also as impressive –- from jerseys to a golf cart and special seating. Patrick has two seats from Arrowhead Stadium, home to the Chiefs, that are positioned on his back patio facing a TV where he can watch the games.
And you can’t forget the hats, including his custom fedora. "Patrick Mahomes' mother loved it and she tried it on as a matter of fact,” said Patrick.
Leading up to the game, it's all about keeping a positive attitude. “I just keep the faith, you know, I think it's going to be a good game," said Vanessa. "I think Chiefs are going to take it.”
While diehard fans may love the place they call home, their heart beats just as loudly for the city of their favorite football team.
“We love San Diego but you know what, like I said, my hometown is Kansas City and I only get to have one," Patrick added.
