Cubs trade catcher Matt Thaiss to White Sox for cash considerations

CHICAGO (WGN) – A week after former Cub Mike Tauchman signed with the White Sox, the North Siders have traded another player to the South Siders.

According to a press release from the White Sox, they have acquired catcher Matt Thaiss from the Cubs in exchange for cash considerations.

Thaiss spent the 2024 season with the Los Angeles Angels, hitting .204 with nine doubles, two home runs and 16 RBI over 57 games. He was acquired by the Cubs from the Angels in exchange for cash considerations on Nov. 20.

As mlb.com's Scott Merkin first pointed out, Thaiss has already contributed toward a footnote in White Sox's recent history.

He was the first batter Liam Hendriks faced on May 29, 2023, when Hendriks made a resounding return from his battle against non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Merkin said Thaiss gave Hendriks extra time to take in an emotional moment at Guaranteed Rate Field, which Hendriks praised postgame.

Thaiss is a career .208/.313/.342 hitter with 23 doubles, 22 homers and 79 RBI in 245 games over six major-league seasons with the Angels (2019-24). He has appeared in 142 games at catcher, 47 at third base, 31 at first, one at second and one in left field.

Thaiss, a native of Jackson, N.J., originally was selected by the Angels in the first round (No. 16 overall) of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Virginia.

The White Sox 40-man roster increases to 40.
