The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to a contract extension with one of the key pieces of the team's World Series title run.
The Dodgers reached agreement Friday on a deal with Tommy Edman, ensuring that the do-it-all utility-man will remain with the team for the foreseeable future.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, Edman agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $74 million. The deal will keep the reigning National League Championship Series MVP with the Dodgers through 2029, including a sixth-year team option.
Passan says the deal comes with a $17 million signing bonus, and like much of the team's recent controversial marquee signings, will include some money deferred down the line.
"Tommy Tanks" arrived in Los Angeles at the MLB trade deadline in July, having played his entire career with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was acquired in a three-team deal that also netted the Dodgers relief pitcher Michael Kopech, while sending prospects and infielder Miguel Vargas to the Chicago White Sox.
Edman was recovering from offseason wrist surgery and hadn't suited up for a single game in 2024 when the Dodgers took a swing on him.
He rewarded them by slashing .327 in the postseason with 20 hits, including 2 home runs, 13 RBI and five stolen bases, all while playing Golden Glove-worthy defense at both shortstop and center field.
The team repaid the favor by upping his salary and locking him up for the long-term.
It's the latest major offseason move for the defending champion Dodgers, who just inked a five-year, $182 million deal with two-time Cy Young Award-winning pitcher Blake Snell.
The Dodgers enter the winter offseason with significant decisions to make regarding other postseason heroes, including outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, utility man Kike Hernandez, relief pitcher Blake Treinen and starting pitchers Jack Flaherty and Walker Buehler.
The team has also been heavily linked to Japanese flamethrower Roki Sasaki, who could join his countrymen, Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, in the Dodgers (renovated) clubhouse.
