Game 5 World Series hero Walker Buehler celebrated his team's title by donning another beloved Dodgers player's jersey for Friday's championship parade.
Buehler asked longtime Dodgers pitcher and current broadcaster Orel Hershiser if he could borrow his actual game-worn jersey from the team's 1988 World Series—the last championship that the team celebrated with a parade.
Trading his No. 21 for No. 55, Buehler honored the club legend, whose 1988 season was one of the greatest performances by a pitcher in MLB history.
Hershiser won the National League Cy Young award for the league's best pitcher and then followed it up by winning NL Championship Series MVP and then the World Series MVP—highlighted by his shutout in Game 2 and a two-run performance to clinch in Game 5.
Buehler had his own heroic moments in the 2024 World Series, coming in to pitch in relief during Game 5 Wednesday, putting his availability for a possible Game 7 in risk.
Buehler retired all three batters he faced in his one inning of work, striking out two and forcing a ground out.
Hershiser's game-worn jersey will likely be a bit worse for wear when Buehler returns it. Video from the event showed the 30-year-old partaking in a beer bong on his float, and the excitement may have caused him to sweat a little.
However, Hershiser said he didn’t mind and had no plans to get it dry cleaned.
