Moose on the Loose: Yankees' struggles continue

NEW YORK (PIX11) – To quote former Knick Michael “Sugar” Ray Richardson, “the ship be sinking.” There’s no other way to cut it when you are looking at the New York Yankees. The Yankees are 10-22 in their last 32 games. At one point, they were 50-22. That is a long time ago.

The Yankees’ offense is reliant on both Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, and there is not much else. The starting rotation has soured, and they just got embarrassed the last two nights in the Bronx by the New York Mets.

The MLB trade deadline is July 30 at 6 p.m. General manager Brian Cashman better get moving due to the uncertainty of the future of Soto, an impending free agent, following this season.

There was a time when the Yankees as an organization would react to this downturn. That was when George Steinbrenner owned the team. Those times are long gone.

Even though the Yankees have not won a World Series since 2009, they are wildly successful. They generated $657 million in revenue in 2023 when they went 82-80. Their valuation as a team is $7.5 billion. They are packing the ballpark in the Bronx. Through June, they tallied $257.6 million in ticket sales.

So it really comes down to how you define success. From a business perspective, they are a wagon. They are successful on the field in the regular season, but October success has not followed.

The standard that used to define the Yankees – World Series or bust – is long gone. And with that, accountability went out the door as well.

Up next for the Yankees are the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park Friday night.
