Bucs rookie McMillan shines at training camp

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — There have been a number of standouts throughout the first few days of Bucs training camp, but without a doubt the star of Day 2 was Jalen McMillan.

The rookie wideout caught two touchdown passes today and has drawn rave reviews from head coach Todd Bowles and his teammates.

"We know he has outstanding hands and competitiveness," Bowles said. "We know he can play all three spots. Obviously, we've got Trey and Rock and a lot of guys in there playing, but we're really high on him. He's very smart, very competitive and he has a motor that doesn't stop."

"Super polished," Evans said of McMillan. "Super polished rookie, smart. Last night at the hotel before curfew, I come in and he's in there with a couple of guys doing walkthrough for the plays today," Evans said. "I said 'Man, this is a new offense for me, too, let me get some plays.' So, they're keeping me motivated and keeping me sharp. So [McMilan], I look for him to have a great year for us."

McMillan is competing for the third-receiver job alongside Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. While he's certainly looked the part to start camp, McMillan says his ultimate goal is to earn the trust of starting quarterback Baker Mayfield.

"One of my biggest goals for camp is to make Baker trust me with everything in his body," said McMillan. "Whenever he throws the ball my way, I just want to be able to bring it in and make myself be a target for him. Ever since day one he's been giving me a lot of game. During routes on air, he'll make sure I go in so that can get good timing down. He's giving me small tips on my game, and on his game too so that I can adjust. He's a great leader."
