Oakland A's continue talks to extend lease at Coliseum

(KRON) -- The Oakland Athletics are continuing talks with the City of Oakland and Alameda County about a possible extension of the team's lease at the Oakland Coliseum. Alameda County Supervisor David Haubert was present at a meeting between the parties on Thursday.

Haubert characterized Thursday's meeting as a good discussion. The Athletics, who are in the process of trying to relocate to Las Vegas, are interested in extending their lease at the Coliseum another three years.

The City of Oakland is reportedly open to the possibility of a lease extension. However, in return the city has suggested that the team leave behind their branding and logo when it moves to Vegas in addition to playing an active role in bringing a Major League Baseball expansion team to Oakland.

In addition to Haubert, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao's Chief of Staff Leigh Hanson and Oakland City Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan were present at Thursday's meeting.

According to Haubert, the county has suggested that in return for a lease extension, the team should sell their stake in the Coliseum to the African American Sports and Entertainment Group. Discussions have also been held about increases and changes to the current lease agreement regarding how much the A's pay and revenue sharing.

Both the mayor and the A's characterized Thursday's meeting as productive.

"The City of Oakland had a productive meeting with A's and the County to discuss the team's desire to discuss a lease extension at the Coliseum. All parties have agreed to refrain from negotiating terms of any potential deal in the press. We look forward to future discussions," said Mayor Thao.

"We once again had a positive and productive meeting with the City of Oakland and Alameda County regarding the extension of our lease at the Coliseum. We look forward to continuing our discussions over the next few weeks ahead of our next scheduled meeting on April 2," the A's said in a statement.

The next meeting between the parties is scheduled for April 2, according to the A's. According to Haubert, one of the next steps could include getting MLB involved in the discussion.

The A's current lease at the Coliseum expires this year, while the team's proposed new Vegas ballpark isn't expected to open until 2028.

In what could be a related matter, the Oakland Coliseum Authority has a special board meeting on the books for Friday. One item of new business includes discussing a license agreement that could see the Oakland Roots and Oakland Soul soccer teams play home matches in the stadium for the 2025-2026 season.
