NFL free agency blog: What the 49ers, Raiders have done so far

(KRON) -- The NFL opened its free agency period on Monday, allowing teams and players to begin making legal contact with one another. As usual, the first day of free agency was busy, with reports of new deals flying in every few minutes.

Some big names came off the board quickly, beginning with reports Sunday night that quarterback Russell Wilson was joining the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Las Vegas Raiders were active, reportedly making big moves to add defensive tackle Christian Wilkins and quarterback Gardner Minshew.

The San Francisco 49ers, however, have not been among the most active teams in the early period. Still, they reportedly agreed to one deal on Monday while letting a long-time team mainstay walk away.

What the 49ers did

Tuesday, March 12

2:02 p.m. -- 49ers sign DT Jordan Elliott

The Niners have made another move on defense by signing defensive tackle Jordan Elliott to a two-year, $10 million deal, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said. The 26-year-old was acquired by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft and played with that team for his first four seasons.

9:07 a.m. -- 49ers QB Sam Darnold to the Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are expected to sign 49ers quarterback Sam Darnold, according to the NFL Network. Sources told the network that Darnold would receive $10 million in a one-year deal with the Vikings.

Darnold had signed with the 49ers on a one-year deal in 2023.

Darnold started and played in one full regular season game for the Niners after the team secured the top seed in the playoffs. In that final regular season game, Darnold recorded 16 completions on 26 attempts for 189 yards and had 1 touchdown.

5:36 p.m. -- 49ers add defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos

The 49ers continued to add to their defensive line by agreeing to a deal with former Carolina Panthers edge rusher Yetur Gross-Matos, NFL Network said.

The deal is reportedly worth $18 million for two years. Gross-Matos had 142 tackles and 13 sacks over four seasons with the Panthers, including 4.5 sacks last season.

3:19 p.m. -- 49ers tender contract to WR Jauan Jennings

The 49ers tendered a one-year contract to wide receiver Jauan Jennings, the team announced. He has spent the last three seasons in San Francisco, going for 963 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in that time. In last year's Super Bowl, Jennings caught a touchdown and threw for another one.

2:02 p.m. -- 49ers sign edge rusher Leonard Floyd

The 49ers agreed to a deal with veteran pass rusher Leonard Floyd, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Rapoport said the deal is for two years and $20 million, with the potential to grow to $24 million. Floyd, 31, will get $12 million guaranteed in the first year of the deal.

Floyd was drafted with the No. 9 overall pick by the Chicago Bears in 2016 and has spent his career with the Bears, Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills. He had 10.5 sacks last season for Buffalo, which is tied for a career best.

In his eight seasons as a pro, Floyd has totaled 58 sacks. He has been consistent over his last four seasons, tallying at least nine sacks in each one. He has shown impressive durability, having not missed a game since 2017.

9:09 a.m. -- 49ers re-sign QB Brandon Allen

San Francisco re-signed quarterback Brandon Allen, according to NFL Network. Allen will be a reserve behind Brock Purdy.

Who the 49ers lost

The biggest name to likely depart the 49ers is defensive tackle Arik Armstead. ESPN reported that the 49ers will release him after the two sides were unable to agree on a deal. Armstead played each of the last nine seasons with the 49ers and had five sacks last year.

Backup tight end Charlie Woerner left the 49ers for the Atlanta Falcons, his agent told ESPN. Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw reportedly signed with the Jets.

What their opponents did

The Philadelphia Eagles made one of the biggest splashes in free agency, agreeing to a deal with running back Saquon Barkley. Barkley was the 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and made two Pro Bowls with the New York Giants.

The Atlanta Falcons signed the top quarterback on the market, bringing over Kirk Cousins from the Minnesota Vikings. The Falcons reportedly gave Cousins $180 million over four years with $100 million guaranteed.

Raiders update

The Raiders were busy on day one of free agency. According to NFL Network, they agreed to a deal with former Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Christian Wilkins that will pay the 28-year-old veteran $110 million over four years.

Las Vegas also reportedly agreed to a deal with quarterback Gardner Minshew. Minshew started 13 games for the Indianapolis Colts last season and helped the team win seven of them. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said he will compete with Aidan O'Connell for the starting role.
