Lone Peak 3-peats as 6A state champions

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) - It's the year of repeat champions in girls high school basketball.

After Bountiful repeated as 5A state champs, Lone Peak cruised past top-seeded Copper Hills to win the 6A title, 65-47 for the Knights' third straight state championship.

The Grizzlies came into the championship game with a gaudy record of 25-1, but fell behind early to the defending champs and were never able to recover.

Shawnee Nordstrom and Naia Tanuvase each scored 16 points for the Knights. Kennedy Woolston added 15, while Zuri Nordstrom poured in 12 points off the bench.

"I think our girls just really stuck to game plan and executed it," said head coach Nancy Warner. "Weally found ways to stick together, and I think we managed momentum swings throughout that game really well. I think it just it means a lot, I'm proud of them, their work ethic."

Sarah Bartholomew dominated the boards with 15 rebounds for Lone Peak.

The Knights drained 11 of 21 three-pointers, with Shawnee Nordstrom going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Lon Peak out-rebounded the Grizzlies, 36-23.

Lone Peak led 31-23 at the half and 50-38 after three quarters. The Knights built the lead to as many as 19 in the fourth quarter.

"I'm just so happy," Woolston said. "I love my team. We play so well together and I just love them so much. I'm so happy I'm able to win with such a great team."

The Knights shot 46 percent from the field, and held the Grizzlies to just 34 percent shooting.

Ellie Taylor led Copper Hills with 18 points, while Skylie Barker had 15.

"These girls work incredibly hard every day," Warner said. "It's almost to a point where you have to kick them out of the gym instead of asking them to be there, but that just shows how much they want to improve and get better every day."
