Lakeside equestrian community raises concerns over monster truck show

LAKESIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Some Lakeside horse owners are speaking out after hearing a monster truck show would be rolling through the local Dianne Jacob Equestrian Park.

"Just not a good location. Great event for sure, wrong location," said Trisha Mitchel, who's part of the local equestrian community.

The park is surrounded by boarding facilities and horse owners say the noise could cause serious harm to the horses.

"If they get spooked, there’s no telling what they’re capable of doing. If they get extremely fearfu,l they could try to run through fence," Mitchel said.

The national touring company Monster Truck Wars is currently advertising two shows at the equestrian park to take place next month. The company contracted by the county to run the park -- Equine Event Services -- sent FOX 5/KUSI a statement that says in part:

"We have already placed contractual obligations on the producers of the monster truck event to make modifications to their muffler systems to bring the noise within permissible standards mandated by the County. We are continuing to investigate the issues raised by the community's concern and will remain open to reasonable suggestions."

Still, some residents are wary.

"This is a residential area, a two-lane road," Mitchel said.

Traffic is another issue raised and because the park is an equestrian property, there are questions over how the event would damage the arena that horses depend on being maintained.

"You can destroy your horse's legs on destroy footings and footings that are not properly maintained, so to hear that monster trucks are going to be coming in there and tearing up that footing that they spent a lot of time and money getting perfected was shocking," said Laura Ballard, owner of Bella Vista Ranch.

Local residents say they are sharing their concerns with county leaders about the event. Meanwhile, Equine Event Services told FOX 5/KUSI the event is permitted by the county and, as of now, is happening as scheduled on March 23.
