This Day in Bulldog History: February 18

(KSEE) - In February of 1964, the Fresno State men's basketball program was thriving in the Division II ranks, under the leadership of Harry Miller, who was in his fourth year leading the Bulldogs.

That February, they were in a nice groove - especially offensively - as I found out when I came across an article written on This Day in Bulldog History.

On February 18th, 1964, a headline in the Fresno Bee made mention of a Bulldog squad that had set a school record the previous night.

That squad was the Fresno State men's basketball team, at that time, an emerging Division II program that was coming off two straight conference titles, and a run all the way to the Elite 8 of the Division II NCAA Tournament the year before.

And on that Tuesday in the middle of February, the Bulldogs had to be thinking another postseason run could be in the offing, after the performance they put together the night before in Orange, California, when the Bulldogs had run Chapman College out of their own gym, to the tune of a school-record 112 points in a 36-point win.

All five Bulldog starters had scored in double figures, and guard Marty Sharp was especially sharp.

He finished with a season-high 21 points, while making 8-of-9 field goals.

The win was the Bulldogs eighth in a row, and 15th in their last 16 games.

They would finish a perfect 10-0 in conference that year, on their way to a California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship, and host the Division II Pacific Coast Regional in the North Gym at Fresno State, where they would eventually lose the regional final to Cal Poly Pomona.

One more footnote. That school record of 112 points in a game would actually only last a short time, because four games later, the Bulldogs scored 113 points in a home win over Westmont.
