Stephen Curry edges WNBA star, Bay Area native Sabrina Ionescu in 3-point contest

(KRON) -- Two Bay Area sharpshooters went head to head in NBA All-Star Saturday Night in Indianapolis. It was the NBA's best shooter versus the WNBA's best shooter -- the first-of-its-kind contest.

Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry versus New York Liberty's Sabrina Ionescu.

Curry edged the Walnut Creek native Ionescu by putting up 29 of a possible 40 points in the shootout. Ionescu scored 26 points.

Ionescu challenged Curry to a 3-point competition after she won the WNBA 3-Point Contest last summer by scoring a record 37 points (out of a possible 40) in the final round.

Curry accepted the challenge and hinted at the shootout during a Jan. 25 game against the Sacramento Kings. Ionescu responded to Curry's words by accepting the challenge.

The NBA officially announced the “Stephen vs. Sabrina” shootout a few days later.

Curry is a two-time NBA 3-Point Contest winner and set the all-time record with 3,577 makes from distance in the regular season. The four-time NBA champion has the regular-season record for most 3-pointers (402) set in 2015-16.

Ionescu set the WNBA single-season record with 128 3-pointers in the 2023 season. Ionescu attended Miramonte High School in Orinda.

The shootout was a special attraction separate from the league's annual 3-point contest. The event for charity took place at Lucas Oil Stadium. Both players shot from the same distance with Curry shooting with an NBA-sized ball while Ionescu shot with a WNBA-sized ball.

“Hopefully, this isn’t the last time we do this,” Ionescu said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
