Oakland native Devin Haney set to defend title against Ryan Garcia

(KRON) -- After winning the WBC super lightweight championship in front of a sold-out Chase Center in San Francisco last December, Bay Area native Devin Haney is set to defend his title in another blockbuster event this spring.

Haney will face fellow star Ryan Garcia on April 20, the fighters and event promoters announced on social media Friday. The venue and location are to be determined.

The fight will be broadcast on DAZN worldwide and on DAZN pay-per-view in the United States.

Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) and Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) have a history as they faced each other six times in the amateurs, going 3-3 against each other. The seventh meeting, which Garcia is calling Game 7, will settle the score between two longtime rivals.

Things already got heated between the fighters on the day of the announcement. The two were caught on camera in a verbal altercation that became physical. During a Super Bowl week event Friday in Las Vegas, Garcia appeared to shove Haney, which led to a physical altercation.

Both 25 years old, Haney and Garcia are two of boxing's biggest stars. They have both headlined pay-per-view events.

Most notably, Garcia's April 2023 loss to Gervonta "Tank" Davis was a commercial success. Garcia versus Davis garnered 1.2 million pay-per-view buys -- an event that generated over $100 million in total revenue.

Haney-Garcia likely isn't going to reach that level of commercial success but will still be a highly-anticipated matchup. Garcia said on Instagram details about tickets and venue will "come soon."

Garcia boasts over 15 million combined followers on Instagram and TikTok. Haney has 2.6 million Instagram followers.
