49ers erase 17-point deficit, punch ticket to Super Bowl LVIII after comeback win over Lions

(KRON) -- Super Bowl bound! The San Francisco 49ers are going back to the Super Bowl after a comeback 34-31 win over the Detroit Lions in Sunday's NFC Championship at Levi's Stadium.

San Francisco earns a date with AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII. It will be a rematch of Super Bowl LIV four years ago when the Jimmy Garoppolo-led 49ers lost to the Chiefs.

The 49ers dug themselves into a first-half deficit of 24-7. The Santa Clara crowd was quieted by the fast start from the visiting Lions who scored 14 straight points in the first quarter.

“No one was rah-rah,” Purdy said. “No one was freaking out. It’s football. There’s a lot of experienced guys on this team, veteran guys who have been in crazy situations. We were just like, ‘We have to do our job.’”

San Francisco then went on a tear in the second half with 27 unanswered points as the home crowd came alive. The Lions finally scored again with under a minute left to cut it to 34-31.

“We’re not going out like this,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said of the mindset at halftime. “Guys didn’t want today to be the last day. We put ourselves in a hole. They played like it in the second half and we were able to get the ball to bounce the right way and we made up for what we did in the first half.”

Offensively, 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey led the way with two rushing touchdowns. Defensively, the 49ers forced a fumble of Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs in the third quarter that led to a McCaffrey touchdown late in the third to tie it 24-24.

49ers Notables

  • Brock Purdy: 20/31 completions, 267 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
  • Christian McCaffrey: 20 carries, 90 yards, 2 TDs
  • Brandon Aiyuk: 3 receptions, 68 yards, 1 TD
  • Deebo Samuel: 8 receptions, 89 yards

Super Bowl LVIII will be on Sunday, Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. PT, and the game will be televised on CBS.
