Four Giants assistant coaches fired after 6-11 season

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (PIX11) — I don't know who is to blame, and quite frankly, I really don't care.

When it comes to Giants head coach Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. Why did this only last two years? Why did Wink decide to step down earlier today as defensive coordinator?

Well, after Daboll said he expected Wink to be back Monday morning, Daboll and the Giants decided to fire his outside linebackers coach Drew Wilklins and his brother Kevin, who are both close to Martindale, which led to his resignation.

When Daboll hired Martindale as his defensive coordinator, there was no previous coaching relationship; Daboll hired the best defensive mind available. Their relationship was reportedly an issue during the season, and it should not come as any surprise that the two men have parted ways.

There is no other way to cut it: Wink Martindale's resignation is a huge loss for the Giants.

He is a very good coach who connects with his players and is great at getting the best out of them. When you look at the Giants' defensive performance this season, it was not particularly strong as a unit. Maybe it was Wink's lack of adjustments as a defensive coordinator that ultimately did him in, just as it did in Baltimore.

Clearly, the personalities of the two men became an issue. Wink talked about New York being a destination place to coach, now he moves on.

For Daboll, the pressure is now on to find a defensive coordinator to replace Wink, who is as talented and creative and has garnered the respect in the room similar to the one who decided to walk out the door.

There is no way to cut it; it is never good when talented coaches decide to leave your NFL team.

Can the Giants replace Wink? For sure.

Will it be difficult? Absolutely.

Until next time, New York, I'm Marc Malusis.
