SF Giants call up 2022 draft pick batting nearly .400 in the minor leagues

SAN FRANCISCO — Wade Meckler, the Giants’ eighth-round pick last year, has done nothing but hit since reaching pro ball. The outfielder hit .439 in A-ball, .456 at High-A, .336 at Double-A and .400 in 10 games since reaching Triple-A Sacramento.

The Giants will now see if he can keep it up in the major leagues, just 13 months after being drafted out of Oregon State.

Meckler, 23, was promoted Monday to join the Giants before they opened a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, the club announced in a series of roster moves. Fellow outfield prospect Luis Matos was optioned back to Triple-A along with infielder Mark Mathias, clearing space on the big club for recently signed infielder Johan Camargo, as well.

The 11th rookie to debut for the Giants this season, Meckler will also become the fourth player from the 2022 draft to reach the major leagues — the first for any organization besides the Los Angeles Angels.

In 92 professional games since being drafted, Meckler, a 5-10, 178-pound left-handed hitter, has combined for a .377/.472/.527 batting line, a .999 OPS, with six home runs, 26 doubles and three triples.

Outfielder Luis González, who recently completed his rehab from back surgery, was designated for assignment and Anthony DeSclafani, who was unlikely to pitch against this season, was placed on the 60-day injured list to clear space on the 40-man roster for Meckler and Camargo.

Camargo, a 29-year-old veteran infielder who appeared in 52 games for the Phillies last season and recently signed a minor-league deal with San Francisco. He is a career .255/.313/.410  hitter over six major-league seasons.
