A Minnesota legislator was arrested early Friday for driving while intoxicated.
Rep. Elliott Engen, R-White Bear Township, was arrested in the city at 1:51 a.m. after White Bear Lake police pulled him over for speeding, having expired registration and for an inoperable headlight on his vehicle.
Engen, 27, was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired and had a 0.13 blood alcohol content level, according to a breath test. He was released from custody early Friday.
“I'm extremely disappointed to learn of Rep. Engen's arrest,” House Speaker Lisa Demuth, R-Cold Spring, said in a statement Friday. “I will be working to gather information about the circumstances of his arrest and charges and will address this directly with Rep. Engen and consider further consequences as the legal process unfolds.”
Engen was on the House floor for a series of votes on Thursday evening. He is currently running for state auditor.
Several lawmakers from both parties have been arrested and charged for impaired driving offenses in recent years.
Engen has not been charged, but MPR News is naming him because he is a public official.
