Two top DFL candidates want to become the next U.S. senator for Minnesota.

The seat is currently held by Sen. Tina Smith, who announced she will not seek reelection earlier this year. Democratic candidates Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan and U.S. Rep. Angie Craig are crisscrossing the state, trying to raise money and support with about 10 months until the DFL primary.

Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer spoke with Lt. Gov. Flanagan and U.S. Rep. Craig about their campaigns for the senate, progressive values and the current impacts of the federal government shutdown.

Flanagan spoke with Cathy Wurzer on Oct. 23, and Craig joined the program on Oct. 24. Listen to both candidate interviews by clicking the player above.
