TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A bill limiting drivers from hanging out in the far left lane on highways has passed the Florida Senate and is on its way to DeSantis' desk to be signed.

House Bill 317, titled "Interstate Safety," received 37 yeas and 0 nays from the Florida Senate in a vote on Thursday.

The bill prohibits drivers from driving in the "furthermost left-hand lane" on roadways with two or more lanes in the same direction, with a speed limit of at least 65 mph.

An exception to this bill is if drivers are using the left lane to pass another vehicle, exiting the roadway, or being otherwise directed by an official traffic control device or law enforcement. The bill also doesn't apply to emergency, maintenance, or construction vehicles.

Drivers who violate this rule would face a fine of up to $158.

If the bill becomes law, it will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2025.
