Nevada Democrat on Mayorkas impeachment: 'Shoveling the same old s*** and calling it sugar'

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Nevada Democratic Rep. Dina Titus called the Republican-led impeachment investigation into U.S. Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas a “sham,” adding it’s “just shoveling the same old s*** and calling it sugar.”

Titus made the remark Tuesday during the House Committee on Homeland Security’s markup for articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, who leads the Cabinet department responsible for border security.

Republicans allege Mayorkas has failed “to support and defend” the U.S Constitution amid the decades-long southern border crisis.

“He has willfully and systemically refused to comply with the laws passed by Congress and breached the trust of Congress and the American people,” committee chair Rep. Mark Green, MD, a Republican from Tennessee, said. “The results have been catastrophic and have endangered the lives and livelihoods of all Americans.”

Titus said House Republicans’ attempt was a sham, calling it “mental dullness” while citing earlier efforts to impeach another Cabinet secretary.

“I think another saying appropriately describes what’s going on here, and that’s just shoveling the same old s*** and calling it sugar,” Titus said. “And that’s not what the people want us to do.”

Titus also cited a bipartisan border agreement held up in Congress, which would in part, allow a president to shut down the border if a certain number of migrants illegally cross.

Arrests for illegal border crossings from Mexico reached an all-time high in December.

Titus represents Nevada's first congressional district, which encompasses the central and southeastern Las Vegas valley, including the Las Vegas Strip.
