BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Head Wrestling Coach Luke Smith and the Roadrunners added a former NCAA champion to the roster on Wednesday.
Cal State Bakersfield announced the addition of AJ Ferrari on Sept. 4 to the school's wrestling program for the 2024-2025 season. Ferrari was a former wrestler for Oklahoma State University, winning a national championship as a freshman during the 2020-2021 season. He earned a bid to the U.S. Olympic Trials after his national championship victory.
Program officials say Ferrari is one of the highest-rated signings in Cal State Bakersfield history.
"We are very excited about AJ coming to Bakersfield," said Head Coach Luke Smith. "He is a difference maker who I expect to be contending for another National title this season. AJ is driven and ready to make this comeback."
Smith enters his sixth season as head coach of the wrestling program.
Ferrari is a native of Allen, Texas and was the ranked first overall in the 2020 recruiting class. In Oct. 2023, sexual battery charges were dismissed against him after an alleged incident in Oklahoma.
